A letter from Sheriff Hoss Mack,

Today the United States Attorney’s Office in Mobile issued a statement that they will not seek prosecution against any parties resulting from an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation into the Baldwin County Courthouse Security System. The Investigation was initiated in October 2011.

The Sheriff’s Office cooperated fully in the investigation. All available data, records and documentation were turned over to the FBI for review. The US Attorney’s Office found the actions which were taken were to generally enhance courthouse security and protection of courthouse personnel. The determination was also made there was no nefarious intent to gather any audio intercepts and the entire application and implementation process had been transparent.

As only one member of the Courthouse Security Committee, I can say I am pleased this matter has been brought to a conclusion. As I stated from the very beginning, the Sheriff’s Office was vested with the authority to improve an existing system with recommendations discussed with the Committee and do so with increased public safety as its goal. The responsibility of safety and security is a serious issue and one that remains a top priority of this Sheriff’s Office. We will continue to work with the Committee to provide the safest environment for our courts and all citizens who have the need to visit any of our courthouses.

I appreciate the in-depth nature of this review.

(Orange Beach)

On Tuesday, May 1 the South Baldwin Newcomers' Club will have it's luncheon at Zen. Zen is a restaurant that is located in the Publix shopping Center in Orange Beach. Reservations are required for the luncheon.
We are so pleased to announce that our speaker at our luncheon will be Debbit Elliott. After a stint on Capitol Hill, NPR National Correspondent Debbie Elliott is back covering the news in her native South, as a resident of Orange Beach, AL. Based in Alabama, Ms. Elliott's reporting has ranged from hurricanes and oil spills to industry and politics. Her coverage of the BP oil spill in 2010 and its aftermath focus on the human impact of the spill, the government's response and the region's recovery. In 2010, she launched a series on Morning Edition and All Things Considered, "The Disappearing Coast," which examines the history and culture of south Louisiana, the state's complicated relationship with the oil and gas industry and the oil spill's lasting impact on a fragile coastline.

Ms. Elliott is a former weekend host of NPR's All Things Considered. In that role she interviewed a variety of luminaries and world leaders, including Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. She celebrated the 40th Anniversary of "Alice's Restaurant" with Arlo Guthrie, and mixed it up on the rink with the Baltimore's Charm City Roller Girls. She profiled the late historian John Hope Franklin and the children's book author Eric Carle.

Since joining NPR in 1995, Ms. Elliott has covered the re-opening of Civil Rights-era murder cases, the legal battle over displaying the Ten Commandments in courthouses, the Elian Gonzales custody dispute from Miami, and a number of hurricanes, from Andrew to Katrina. On Election night in 2000, Elliott was stationed in Tallahassee, Fla., and was one of the first national reporters on the scene for the contentious presidential election contest that followed. She has covered landmark smoker lawsuits, the tobacco settlement with states, the latest trends in youth smoking and tobacco-control policy and regulation. She's been to a Super Bowl, the Summer Olympics and baseball spring training.

Chris Myers Automall chose the Baldwin County Humane Society (BARC!) all-volunteer cat adoption team for the November  Extra Mile Award $500 check presentation.   To view the Fox 10 TV commercial of the Extra Mile Award check presentation visit www.BaldwinHumane.org.

Boxes taped shut with kittens inside abandoned at ballparks and litters dumped apparently by breeders at a school parking lot are typical rescues the Baldwin County Humane Society (BARC!) Kitten Kaboodles (KK) volunteers do.

A mound of ants disguised the four kittens -- just days old --beside a dumpster at a local flea market.  Only one survived – it’s a “Wonder” since her right eye ulcerated and had to be removed.

“Wonder” was the 560th cat who went from discarded to highly regarded when the all-volunteer KK team rescued them between 2008 and 2011.

BARC’s innovative KK program functions through a network of retail adoption sites, veterinarians and fosters who provide adoption space and socialization for tame cats that have been abandoned, neglected or abused.

Year-round BARC’s cats can be seen at their office in downtown Fairhope,  Old Tyme Feed in Fairhope and PetSmart Eastern Shore Center. They also have by-appointment-only adoption centers in Foley, Spanish Fort and Fairhope.

Glenda Turner has been the volunteer KK coordinator since the program was founded in 2000. The all-volunteer team who have done as many as 15 cat adoptions in a single week,  includes Jayne Dillion, Nancy Johnson, Donna  Lundy, Shirley Kittrell, Cheryl Bishop, Linda King, GretchenFunderburk, Martha Barton, Nancy Martin, Bob and Carol Vick and Libby and David Levine.  Turner remarked “The $500 Extra Mile check will provide basic medical care for about 60 cats in the Kitten Kaboodle program.”

“The gift of time is a precious asset to our animals and it takes a special person to love all our homeless animals and we recognize this wonderful deed” remarked Sonja Presley, BARC! Executive Director.  “They are the most amazing  and dedicated people you will ever encounter.”

BARC! has a diverse variety of kittens and grown cats:  Diluted Torti, Marble Tabby, Bobtail, Maine Coon, Tuxedo, Calico, Manx, Flame Point Siamese, Gray/White Tabby, Russian Blue, Cameo Tabby, Seal Pint, Swirl, long haired Orange Tabby, Gray/Black Smoke and Irish cats.

BARC! is a no-kill adoption agency (rather than a shelter) established in 1979.  To adopt, foster, volunteer or donate, call 251.928.4585.
