For the 20th year, the Baldwin County Humane Society (BARC!) was the charity of choice for Paws Meet Claus at Magnolia Small Animal Clinic in Foley on December 10, 2011.
The pet photo fundraiser was a collaboration of these generous people: Peter Greer who has volunteered as Santa for 11 years and Beth Waltrip with KodaChromeGirl.com who has volunteered her time and expertise with set design and photography for several years.
Dr Lee Ann McGill donated the entire $1,000 proceeds to the no-kill adoption agency (rather than a shelter) that was established in 1979.
“Dr McGill, her staff, volunteers Santa and the photographer, all embody the true spirit of giving this holiday season” remarked Sonja Presley, BARC! Executive Director. “Their collective efforts along with 50 people who came for pet portraits will allow us to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome more dogs and cats.”

The Teens Against Animal Cruelty (TAAC) club volunteered at the 17th annual Christmas By the Bay held recently at the Fairhope Civic Center.
The benefit for the homeless, abused and injured animals is the major annual fundraiser for the Baldwin County Humane Society (BARC!)
The event raises funds for cats and dogs that may face euthanasia in city and county shelters due to limited space, injuries or health problems and the many programs and services provided by BARC!
Other BARC! services include monthly adoption events, helping find lost pets, training and grooming homeless pets to make them more adoptable; and transport of homeless Baldwin County animals who have been adopted through out-of-state rescue groups. The BARC! Pet Food Pantry is the first of its kind in this region. The organization also funds a county-wide low-cost spay and neuter voucher program for cats and dogs designed to reduce the number of unwanted pets.
“This is our fourth event the TAAC club members from Gulf Shores High School have been involved with” remarked Sonja Presley, Executive Director. “They have so much enthusiasm and are eager to help.”

Boxes taped shut with kittens inside abandoned at ballparks and litters dumped apparently by breeders at a school parking lot are typical rescues the Baldwin County Humane Society (BARC!) Kitten Kaboodles (KK) volunteers do.
A mound of ants disguised the four kittens -- just days old --beside a dumpster at a local flea market. Only one survived – it’s a “Wonder” since her right eye ulcerated and had to be removed.
“Wonder” was the 560th cat who went from discarded to highly regarded when the all-volunteer KK team rescued them between 2008 and 2011.
BARC’s innovative KK program functions through a network of retail adoption sites, veterinarians and fosters who provide adoption space and socialization for tame cats that have been abandoned, neglected or abused.
Year-round BARC’s cats can be seen at their office in downtown Fairhope, Old Tyme Feed in Fairhope and PetSmart Eastern Shore Center. They also have by-appointment-only adoption centers in Foley, Spanish Fort and Fairhope.
Glenda Turner has been the volunteer KK coordinator since the program was founded in 2000. The all-volunteer team who have done as many as 15 cat adoptions in a single week, includes Jayne Dillion, Nancy Johnson, Donna Lundy, Shirley Kittrell, Cheryl Bishop, Linda King, GretchenFunderburk, Martha Barton, Nancy Martin, Bob and Carol Vick and Libby and David Levine. Turner remarked “The $500 Extra Mile check will provide basic medical care for about 60 cats in the Kitten Kaboodle program.”
“The gift of time is a precious asset to our animals and it takes a special person to love all our homeless animals and we recognize this wonderful deed” remarked Sonja Presley, BARC! Executive Director. “They are the most amazing and dedicated people you will ever encounter.”
BARC! has a diverse variety of kittens and grown cats: Diluted Torti, Marble Tabby, Bobtail, Maine Coon, Tuxedo, Calico, Manx, Flame Point Siamese, Gray/White Tabby, Russian Blue, Cameo Tabby, Seal Pint, Swirl, long haired Orange Tabby, Gray/Black Smoke and Irish cats.

“Christmas by the Bay is a fun event and a great way to kick off the holiday season for a very worthy cause in Baldwin County,” said Sonja Presley, Executive Director. “We urge everyone to buy a ticket or make a donation. And, consider making Christmas by the Bay a holiday outing for your book club, supper club or other group.”

The new Spanish Fort branch of Tyndall Federal Credit Union bought 1,000 pounds of dog and cat food for the BARC! Pet Food Pantry.
“Tyndall Federal Credit Union was very honored to help such a deserving organization in the Eastern Shore area” remarked Jessica Wimmer, Advertising and Promotion Specialist. We feel that BARC! Pet Food Pantry does a wonderful service for the community and gives so much of their time, funds and efforts to help the less fortunate. After meeting their volunteers, we are very impressed by all that they do, and hope to build a lasting relationship far into the future.”
The pet food purchase was through the Tyndall CARES program that helps communities. It was the equivalent of one day’s distribution that BARC! does on Tuesdays at Prodisee Pantry in Spanish Fort.
The BARC! Pet Food Pantry is one of the five primary programs of the Baldwin County Humane Society (BARC!). Others are Kitten Kaboodles, dog adoption/transport, Pawsitive Therapy and spay/neuter vouchers.
Maddie Temonia, volunteer program coordinator for the BARC! Pet Food Pantry stated “We have been so fortunate by the support of our community and local businesses, having Tyndall CARES in our family of supporters makes our ability to help local families even more possible.”
