Extreme mass animal cruelty was discovered in Baldwin County, Alabama, on January 26, 2012, at Purple Hearted Puppies shelter in Summerdale and on January 27, 2012, at the Dueitt’s residence in Robertsdale.

The Baldwin County Humane Society (BARC!) has permanent legal custody of the 66 dogs and 56 cats who defied the odds and survived.   BARC! has photographed and catalogued the 122 survivors who were rushed to local veterinary clinics for clear diagnosis and specific treatment plans.

41 cats are now healthy enough for adoption; adoption fee is $55.  Prospective pet parents are encouraged to go to  PetSmart Eastern Shore Centre right now to meet the cats in their adoption towers then fill out the online adoption application at www.BaldwinHumane.org.

An adoption event is set for Saturday, March 3, from 10am to 3pm PetSmart Eastern Shore Centre in Malbis.  BARC! will have their adoptable dogs (none are from Purple Hearted Puppies) and more cats who were the survivors.

“This is a marathon -- not a sprint – for the dogs’ recovery ” remarked Dr Stephanie Powe of Animal Wellness Center in Fairhope.  “Although many of them are recovering well, some of the animals have more severe and lingering illnesses and won’t be healthy enough to adopt out at this time.”

The first dog adoption for the survivors will be later in March.  Meanwhile, BARC! has 198 dogs and cats in their care.

Medical costs will be handled only through the Baldwin County Humane Society; your tax-deductible donations can be made at www. BaldwinHumane.org or mailed to PO Box 206, Fairhope, AL  36533.

BARC! is a no-kill adoption agency (rather than a shelter) established in 1979.  They are a 501(c)3 not-for-profit; they were the first animal welfare agency in Baldwin County.  Their goal is to eliminate the number of abused and abandoned pets through spay/neuter, education, rescue and adoption.

For the 20th year, the Baldwin County Humane Society (BARC!) was the charity of choice for Paws Meet Claus at Magnolia Small Animal Clinic in Foley on December 10, 2011.

The pet photo fundraiser was a collaboration of these generous people:  Peter Greer who has volunteered as Santa for 11 years and Beth Waltrip with KodaChromeGirl.com who has volunteered her time and expertise with set design and photography for several years.

Dr Lee Ann McGill donated the entire $1,000 proceeds to the no-kill adoption agency (rather than a shelter) that was established in 1979.

“Dr McGill, her staff, volunteers Santa and the photographer, all embody the true spirit of giving this holiday season” remarked Sonja Presley, BARC! Executive Director.  “Their collective efforts along with 50 people who came for pet portraits will allow us to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome more dogs and cats.”

The Teens Against Animal Cruelty (TAAC) club volunteered at the 17th annual Christmas By the Bay held recently at the Fairhope Civic Center.

The benefit for the homeless, abused and injured animals is the major annual fundraiser for the Baldwin County Humane Society (BARC!)

The event raises funds for cats and dogs that may face euthanasia in city and county shelters due to limited space, injuries or health problems and the many programs and services provided by BARC!

Other BARC! services include monthly adoption events, helping find lost pets, training and grooming homeless pets to make them more adoptable; and transport of homeless Baldwin County animals who have been adopted through out-of-state rescue groups. The BARC! Pet Food Pantry is the first of its kind in this region. The organization also funds a county-wide low-cost spay and neuter voucher program for cats and dogs designed to reduce the number of unwanted pets.

“This is our fourth event the TAAC club members from Gulf Shores High School have been involved with” remarked Sonja Presley, Executive Director. “They have so much enthusiasm and are eager to help.”

The gift of time is a precious asset to our animals and it takes a special person to love all our homeless animals.  Customer Service volunteers are needed at the Baldwin County Humane Society (BARC!) no-kill adoption agency (rather than a shelter) established in 1979.  People are needed for one shift from either  9am to 12:30pm or from 12:30pm to 4:00pm Monday thru Thursday.  Entails some computer work but mainly greeting customers and answering the phone – not kennel duty.  The BARC! office is located at 306 Magnolia Ave in downtown Fairhope.  Their goal is to eliminate the number of abused and abandoned pets through spay/neuter, education, rescue and adoption. To volunteer, call 251.233.1979 or visit www.BaldwinHumane.org.

In an unprecedented coming together of media, retail and corporate partners, the Baldwin County Humane Society (BARC!) is flourishing.  Recently, BARC! had the honor of recognizing Southern Chevrolet of Foley as a corporate partner.   They have provided the means to increase the number of dogs that can be rescued, rehabilitated then rehomed.

Pet adoption is critical to ending the tragedy of euthanasia – a tragedy that claims the lives of thousands of homeless pets every year in Baldwin County. Mike Werneth, co-owner of Southern Chevrolet of Foley, has a goal to cover boarding and medical expenses for 40 dogs who will be pulled from local kill shelters within 12 months.

At pet adoptions, the dogs wear blue jackets with "I was rescued by Southern Chevrolet of Foley" embroidered on it.  Visit www.BaldwinHumane.org for a photo gallery of dogs sponsored by them; notice they’re  named Chevy, Tahoe, Cammie Camaro, Blazer and Malibu after the vehicles.

“We would like to thank our corporate partner, and we ask that you do the same by giving them your business the next time you need some services” remarked Donna Burns, BARC! Board Member.  When she presented the plaque to Rick Carlisle, New Car Sales Manager, she continued  “We could not do this without  Southern Chevrolet’s help.”

125 motorcycle riders from all over the Gulf Coast raised over $3,000 in the recent BIKERS FOR BARC! poker run for the abused, abandoned and injured animals that are rescued by the Baldwin County Humane Society (BARC!).

Entry fee included a donation of canned or dry dog/cat food to the BARC! Pet Food Pantry which resulted in almost 1,000 pounds.

The 82-mile scenic route concluded Cobalt the Restaurant, located next to Caribe Resort in Orange Beach, where prizes were awarded.

Matt Burton of Spanish Fort held the best poker hand; he won a 4 day/3 night stay at Tidewater 204, an Orange Beach condo valued at $600 donated by Chad and Emily Mitchell with The Seamitchell.com Team with Remax Realty Centre.

Vaughan McFarland of Bon Secour got fabulous consolation prizes for holding the worst poker hand.

“We surpassed our fundraising goal by 50%” remarked Sonja Presley, BARC! Executive Director.  “The success of this event is attributed to Debi and Jim Munsey, event organizers, who chose a fabulous route that everyone enjoyed and they got $1,000 in raffle prizes donated from businesses all around Baldwin County.   There was so much enthusiasm from the motorcycle riders from our first BIKERS FOR BARC! that we’re already planning the next one.”

Videos and pictures from the event are posted to www.BaldwinHumane.org.

The Baldwin County Humane Society (BARC!) recently received a $750 donation from the Lower Alabama Parrot Head Club of Gulf Shores/Orange Beach.

The Parrot Heads are a collection of folks who embrace the music and writings of Jimmy Buffett and believe in "leaving things just a little better than they found them ... and having a BLAST while doing it" according to www.lalph.org.

“For years, the local Parrot Heads have supported the BARC! Pet Food Pantry and our spay/neuter program”“ remarked Sonja Presley, BARC! Executive Director.  “They are so much fun to have as volunteers at our events too.”

(ARA) - Pet owners are often torn between their love of Fido and Fluffy and the discomfort of stuffy noses and watery eyes. In fact, 15 percent of Americans are allergic to animals, and a whopping 11 million are allergic to cats alone, according to WebMD. Although those who suffer from severe allergies may not be able to own pets, mild allergy sufferers can take advantage of these tips and products at home to enjoy sneeze-free time with their furry friends.

"Pets and allergens don't have to go together. Mild allergies shouldn't have to stop pet lovers from enjoying their animals," says Jackie Cooper, senior director of marketing and communications for Eureka. "Following some simple tips and investing in pet-specific products can leave you breathing easier in no time."

Not on the bed: Avoid allowing your dog or cat to sleep with you at night. Pet dander and fur can get absorbed into bedding, heightening allergy symptoms while you sleep. Instead, offer your pet a cozy bed of its own outside your bedroom. This can be as simple as placing a couple towels or an old throw pillow on the floor. Also, consider using allergen-resistant covers on mattresses and pillows.

Accessorize: Consider your allergies when buying toys, litter and other products for your pet. For example, cat owners should opt for natural litter instead of a brand that adds chemicals or scents, while those who are allergic to dogs should avoid toys that may retain saliva.

Sweep it up: Many pet owners would agree that pet hair is the number one problem that comes with owning an animal, and it's even worse for allergy sufferers. For relief, turn to a vacuum that not only offers superior cleaning, but also specializes in picking up pet hair. For example, the Eureka Pet Pal vacuum offers a Hair Raiser for Pets tool that can be used independently from the vacuum by rubbing the soft rubber tool on surfaces to grab embedded hair and gently lift it away from fabric. In addition to Hair Raiser for Pets, the vacuum also offers a PET Power Paw tool, which features small plastic teeth and a rubber strip to gently grab and clean pet hair from hard-to-reach areas, such as stairs.

Take it outside: Groom your pet at least once a week or more often if you have a long-haired breed or a breed prone to shedding. When grooming, make sure to take your pet outside to avoid excess hair and dander floating around the home. And, of course, wash your hands thoroughly after handling your pet.

Travel smart: When making road trips with your pet in tow, use washable seat covers that can be rinsed off at rest stops. And when en route, keep your pet the furthest safe distance from allergic passengers.

With these tips, pet owners can take some simple steps to stop sneezing and start enjoying quality time with their furry friends. For more information about Eureka products for dealing with pets and allergens, call (800) 282-2886 or visit www.eureka.com.
