Gulf Shores, Ala – February 8, 2012 – The 18th Annual Gulf Shores Winter Classic Tennis Tournament sponsored by the Gulf Shores Tennis Club and the City of Gulf Shores was held February 4 and 5 at the George C. Meyer Tennis Center. This year’s tournament featured over 90 Men’s and Women’s Doubles players of all ages and ratings competing in fourteen events throughout the weekend.
In the Ladies’ Division, Kim Humphrey and Heather Moore won the 3.0 level, Jo Phillips and Suzette Taylor won the 3.5 level and Tracy Mason and Jean Salter came out on top in the 4.0 level. Senior Ladies’ winners included Vera Brown and Sue Salinas in the 3.0 level, Stella Martin and Alana Salter in the 3.5 level and Laura Elliot and Julie Listuon in the 4.0 level, while Joyce Gardner and Sally McLendon prevailed in the Super Senior Ladies’ Division.
Men’s Division winners included Cody Mize and Jonathan Young in the 3.0 level and Richard Farmer and Ron Gaylor in the 3.5 level. In the Senior Men’s Division, Roger Koppenhofer and Ken Sutter took top honors in the 3.0 level, while Bill Bisard and Don Linders followed suit in the 3.5 level and Marty Haliday and Walt Listuon took home the Super Senior Men’s championship.
All players received a long sleeve tournament shirt, complimentary lunch, bananas donated by Winn-Dixie and beautiful weather for the two day tournament.
The City of Gulf Shores will be holding the Junior USTA Tournament on February 24-26 for players 18 and under. For more information contact the George C. Meyer Tennis Center at 251-968-1431.

For several weeks The Hangout has been hosting a weekly ping pong tournament on Tuesday nights. Due to a two week closure, the tournament will be played at City Grill in Gulf Shores January 4th and 11th. The tournament will resume at The Hangout January 18th at 6:00pm. The entry fee is $10 and a cash payout goes to 1st and 2nd places. City Grill is located at 2200 East 2nd Street. 251-223-4202.

This facility opened May 2002 and features eight lighted medium speed hard courts. The Pro Shop features Wilson Rackets, tennis shoes and accessories, along with Nike tennis apparel. The Tennis Center offers youth, adult and senior adult tennis programs.
*Note - In August 2007 the courts were totally resurfaced. They are now U.S. Open Series Blue with Winter Green exterior.
